People leave leaders

Feb 21, 2019

The foundation of any successful business is the leadership, agreed? If this is true, which I believe it is, then the same is true of any unsuccessful business - the leadership is the downfall, agreed?

Why is it then, that most organizations fail to invest in the one thing that drives their business forward? All too often I have seen people placed into leadership positions and then left to get on with it. When money is tight, the first thing to go (if it exists in the first place) is the training budget. When the leadership team is not resourced to handle the challenges of an increasingly competitive world, there is no way that a sustainable operation can exist - fact!

Some of you reading this may disagree, and that is okay. However, if you do, I would ask you to dig deep, be honest, and ask why you feel that way?

  • It may be that your organization is prepared to invest in the development of their most valuable resource - their people.
  • It may be that your organization is living...

What to do?

Jan 09, 2019

Have you ever found yourself in a state of confusion where you know that something has to change but you have no idea what to do?

I was in that position for a long time. I would go through every day hoping that my "luck" would change and something would magically appear and change my life for the better! The problem is, hope and wishing are not good strategies without any action to back them up.

Hard work alone will not bring sustained success. This is a harsh but true fact. You only have to look at people who have put in 50 years of work and now have nothing to show for it. They struggle with medical bills and are still in rented accommodation living on minimal social security payments. I had many conversations with people who were maintaining 2 jobs into their 60's and 70's just to make ends meet.

We need to take control and back up our dreams with actions that will lead to success. This sounds easy but, believe me, it is not. To do so we are bucking the trend that has been...

Happy New Year!

Jan 05, 2019

I am a little late with this message but the sentiment remains true - Happy New Year!

What are your plans and goals for 2019?

Do you have goals?

If you have goals, do you have a plan to make them come true?

Too many people start off with good intentions only to fall down at the first obstacle because they haven't formulated a plan and prepared for all eventualities. Don't let this be you!

A goal without a plan is just a wish, and a wish without action will not come true. We all have thoughts and ideas come into our minds but how many of us act on these thoughts and turn them into results? Sadly not many do.

My hope is that you become intentional about what you want to achieve in 2019 and plan with the end in mind. Do not give in to the naysayers who tell you it isn't possible and that you are crazy to have a dream. This is more a reflection of their own limiting beliefs and inadequacies than it is of your dreams and ambitions so keep pushing forward. Plan with the end in mind and...

Mid-Life Crisis

Dec 10, 2018

I remember when I was growing up in England during the 70’s and 80’s people talked about a mid-life crisis and the image that usually accompanied it was a middle aged man in a red sports car with a younger lady on his arm. Yes, this was a stereo-typical image at the time but my question is: Is there still such a thing as a mid-life crisis and, if so, what does it look like now?

I believe that the mid-life crisis still exists but it isn’t as obvious as rushing out to buy a sports car or a Harley Davidson (although I did when I turned 50!). The signs may be less obvious and here are some that you may want to be aware of:

You start to question everything that you have worked for and ask is it enough or was it all worth it?

You wonder if this is all your life is worth, have I reached my peak and now everything else is downhill as I coast to retirement?

You dread going to work on Monday morning, celebrate Wednesday as “Hump day” and live for Friday at 5pm.
